La Segua Marsh

La Segua Marsh is formed at the confluence of the Rio Carrizal and Rio Chone, near the town of San Antonio, next to the community of La Segua, on the province of Manabi. The local government of Manabi has provided some infrastructure for birders who want to visit the marsh. There is a parking lot, and observation tower, and a canoe landing site. The marsh is about 20 km from Chone on the road that goes to San Vicente.

The government is currently working on a project to use the water of these two rivers to irrigate a large area to benefit many farmers that do not have a reliable source of fresh water. This projects has raised some concerns and the Marsh now depends on the actual water management of this project. This is another case of human development versus environmental protection where the humans will take precedence if needed. Additionally there has been no clear laws to protect all of the marshes that were declared important in Ecuador in 2000 under the RAMSAR Convention on Wetlands.

This fresh water wetland is one of the most important in Ecuador and forms part of the Important Bird Areas EC103 in Ecuador.
