Rio Palenque Reserve

This research station was established by the university of Miami in 1970 and then purchased by the Wong Foundation who built a very nice Ecolodge in 2002 for the comfort of birders interested in this humid forest. 

It is located on the main highway between Santo Domingo and Quevedo on Km56 just past the town of Patricia Pilar.  Look on the left hand side for a Rio Palenque sign as go are going towards Quevedo.

This reserve lies at 200 MASL and has 100 hectares of primary forest that is considered the last remaining humid forest in this heavily agricultural area.  The forest has many well maintained trails that can provide access up to the river bank.

Is is important to make reservations with the Wong Foundation otherwise you cannot access the reserve.

There has been many interesting research projects but we are particularly interested in  Testing Hypotheses of Bird Extinction at Rio Palenque
