Isla de la Plata

This island is sometimes referenced to as Poor Man’s Galapagos for the presence of a colony of Blue-footed Boobies, Red-footed Boobies, Naszca Boobies, Waved Albatros,  Tropic Birds, and Magnificent Frigatebirds.  With a little luck it is also possible to see sea lions, dolphins and whales.  The Humback Whales can be observed in the July to September months when the whales seek these warm tropical waters to give birth and search for a strong partner for reproduction.

Isla de la Plata is 27 km west of the coast with 1200 hectares of land area with minimum rainfall and scrub desert vegetation.  There are two main trails that are used to visit the island, only one trail can be visited on a single day unless special arrangements are made with the tour company.  There is control the number of visitors and therefore the time allowed to each group on the island is limited.

Isla de la Plata is also part of the Machalilla National Park and as such is part of the IBAs by Birdlife International EC016 but it has it’s own denomination due to the different bird species found there.
