Cojimies Mangroves

This is another eco-tourism place that provides employment to the local fishermen of Cojimies.  Typical boat tours take you to the Isla del Amor for a dollar but you can hire a fishermen boat to take you through the mangroves in search of great birds.  Here is a good opportunity to help them become more aware of the value of conservation by birding in this beautiful place.

Thirty years ago this area held one of the largest mangrove forest in Ecuador with more than 20,100 hectares but now 84% of this forest has been cut and used as shrimp pools that generate income to a few large industries.  The government has taken notice to this destruction and has proposed that the shrimp industry in the Cojimies estuary pay back the destruction by replanting more mangroves.
